BOOKS:Grandpa Had a Windmill; Grandma Had a Churn, Over On The River, Gone To Texas: From Virginia to Adventure (Eakin Press, 2003)
I am a skilled presenter with years of serving as a visiting author and language arts/reading consultant. I generally present to schools, public or private, or for library programs. I also talk to parent groups, home schooling groups, librarians, and Girl Scouts. In addition to being a children's writer, I have a doctorate in education with a specialty in reading and writing, so I can talk about "Being a Writer," "How to Get Ideas for Writing," "How to Foster Your Child's Love for Books," etc. Since the new book came out, I have also been making presentations to librarians on the topic "Bridging the Gap Between Children and Historical Fiction" and to children on how to write historical fiction and how Gone To Texas came to be written. I bring appropriate display materials, including an actual 150-year-old clock weight, some genuine Texas diamondback rattlesnake rattles, and a classoom-sized recipe for "Deaver's Freight Wagon Stew."
